Custom Steel Forging for Heavy Trucks

Heavy trucks depend on components that have to perform consistently under high loads, repeated stress, and demanding operating conditions. From powertrain systems to wheel-end components, the requirements leave little room for variation from one part to the next.

Walker Forge provides custom steel forging for heavy trucks, OEMs, and Tier 1 suppliers that need dependable production of forged components to their specifications. Our primary manufacturing process is closed-die forging, supported by engineering, in-house die production, heat treating, precision machining, and metallurgical testing.

Bring us your print, 3D model, material specification, and anticipated annual quantity. We can evaluate the application and determine the right path from steel through the finished forged component.

Forged Components for Heavy Truck Applications

Steel forgings are commonly used where truck components experience significant loads, shock, torque, and repeated service cycles. The Forging Industry Association identifies forged components throughout automotive and truck powertrains, steering systems, axles, and wheel assemblies because of the strength and reliability the process can provide. See its industry overview for additional examples.

Walker Forge manufactures custom forgings for demanding machinery applications, including components such as:

  • Transmission gears
  • Transmission shafts
  • Input and output shafts
  • Timing gears
  • Wheel hubs
  • Spindles
  • Ring gears
  • Pinions
  • Pistons

Every heavy truck application has different requirements. Rather than starting with an off-the-shelf component, we work from the customer’s design and material requirements to develop the forging and tooling process.

Our experience spans heavy truck, automotive, diesel engine, construction, agriculture, energy, and other markets where forged components must perform under demanding conditions.

Why Use Closed-Die Steel Forgings for Heavy Trucks?

Walker Forge specializes in closed-die steel forgings, also known as impression-die forgings.

During the closed-die process, heated steel is compressed through a progressive series of dies that form the required geometry. Confining the material within the dies controls metal flow and helps create repeatable part geometry.

The forging process also develops grain flow and refines the grain structure within the component. This can provide the internal consistency and mechanical properties required for parts used in high-load and high-stress applications.

For heavy truck manufacturers, repeatability matters as much as the performance of a single component. Forgings need to remain consistent across production quantities and from lot to lot. Walker Forge supports programs ranging from a few thousand parts per year to approximately 750,000 parts annually, allowing us to work with different production requirements as programs grow or change.

Carbon & Alloy Steel for Custom Truck Forgings

The material behind a forged truck component depends on what that component needs to do. Walker Forge works with special bar quality, or SBQ, steel sourced through approved mills. Our available materials include carbon, alloy, and stainless steel across more than 1,000 grade and size combinations.

Carbon steels can offer an economical option for applications where their available strength and mechanical properties meet the component requirements. Carbon and manganese content can also be combined with heat treatment to achieve different hardness and tensile-strength characteristics.

For applications requiring greater strength, hardenability, toughness, or wear resistance, alloy steel may be specified. Walker Forge works with several alloy steel families, including 4000, 5000, 8000, and 9000 series grades.

Engineering a Custom Forging for Your Application

A successful custom forging starts before steel reaches the press. Customers typically provide Walker Forge with a print or 3D model along with the required raw material designation or specification. From there, our engineers determine how the part should be forged and how the tooling should be designed.

Our engineering capabilities include forge process and tool design, 3D modeling, QForm forging simulation, and gauge and fixture design.

Simulation allows us to evaluate the proposed forging process before production begins. The goal is to develop an efficient sequence that produces the required geometry consistently and gives the customer a forging design to approve before the program moves forward. Walker Forge also designs and manufactures forging dies in-house. Keeping tooling closely connected to the engineering and forging processes helps reduce additional handoffs during development.

More of the Heavy Truck Forging Process Under One Roof

Forging may only be one stage in producing a finished truck component.

Depending on the application, a forged component may also require heat treatment, machining, testing, or a combination of those services. Walker Forge brings several of those capabilities together within the same manufacturing operation.

Heat Treating

Heat treatment can be used to develop the required material properties after forging. Available processes include normalizing, quench and temper, stress relief and annealing, carburizing, vacuum hardening, and induction hardening.

Our heat treatment capabilities allow customers to keep another stage of production connected to the forging program.

Precision Machining

Some forgings require additional machining before they are ready for assembly or final use.

Walker Forge uses CNC-driven machining capabilities to complete required features and help customers reduce the number of outside suppliers involved in the component.

Metallurgical Testing

Heavy truck OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers need more than a part that looks correct.

Walker Forge operates an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited metallurgical laboratory that supports its steel forging and heat-treating operations. Testing capabilities include metallographic analysis, tensile and yield testing, Charpy V-Notch testing, and chemical analysis.

Our metallurgical lab lets us analyze materials and verify mechanical properties based on component requirements.

Forging Quality for OEM & Tier 1 Truck Programs

Quality systems are especially important when forged components move into repeat production. Walker Forge maintains ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016 certifications. Our current IATF registration covers manufacturing forged metal products with value-added heat treatment and machining.

These systems support a manufacturing operation built around repeatability, documented processes, and consistent production for OEM and Tier 1 requirements. Our forging press lines range from 850 to 4,000 tons, giving us flexibility across a wide range of custom forged components. Our production capabilities can support programs from several thousand parts per year through high-volume applications.
